Ken originally trained as a Mental Health Nurse in Dundee. Ken began working with adults in acute and day hospital settings for 3 years in Fife. He then moved to CAMHS as a Senior Nurse Therapist for 8 years where he gained experience working with children and adolescents with various mental health difficulties and their families. This included difficulties such as anxiety, depression, OCD, self-harming and suicidal ideation.
Ken began his child psychotherapy training in 2017 having completed the MSc in Psychoanalytic Observation and Reflective Practice: Therapeutic Work with Children and Young People. In his psychotherapy training, based in Ayrshire and Arron CAMHS, Ken developed the core psychoanalytic skills to work as a psychotherapist with children (0-12) and adolescents (12-18). These children typically experienced long term early trauma and deprivation, and presented with relationship, emotional and developmental difficulties.
Ken is skilled in undertaking psychotherapy assessments, and offers an analytic understanding of a young person’s internal world and what troubles them. He can offer once weekly and intensive (3 times a week) individual psychotherapy, parental support and consultation.
Ken has specific skills in working with children who are care experienced, their carers and the networks around them. In the past year, he has been developing his skills and knowledge working with parents and children at the same time. This is an effective intervention with young children (under 5) and where past traumas interfere with the present parent/child relationship.
